The Games

August 26 2009 - (0) Comments - posted in creating excellence

So - we host the Games in 2012, but what really can we expect to get out of it? My question is a little tongue in cheek as I am a huge supporter and advocate of the Games, but it is fair to say that not all around us are. The sports sector seems to be populated by others with an inbuilt sports heritage or fanaticism, but what of those who couldn’t care less? Our opportunity is surely to touch and help improve as many lives as possible, no matter how marginally, through the experience of 2012.

The initial forecasts and projections will need recasting as has the budget for building and hosting the Games, but where are the big wins to be had?
In my view, we could work to achieve the following:

1. A higher profile and…

Continued Professional Development & Focus Discussion Groups

August 18 2009 - (0) Comments - posted in fit for business

CPD – Continuing Personal or Professional Development - refers to a commitment to structured skills enhancement and personal or professional enrichment.
As part of Creating Excellence’s commitment to CPD, I was asked to attend a skills developing workshop to learn how to run ‘Focus Discussion Groups’.

The course was run by The Eastern Development Centre and supported by Niace, (National Institute of Adult Continuing Education) in Ipswich and quite an unusually pleasant drive up the A12 saw me arriving at the IP-City Centre Building.

I was one of the first to arrive, and it’s always awkward deciding what table you should join, so I opted for a seat adjacent to a gentleman and his dog, who I later…

Swasie Turner MBE Blogs on his fund raising activities

August 18 2009 - (0) Comments - posted in creating excellence

I have now pushed my chair 35,000 miles and have almost reached the magic £1,000,000 for my various charities.

I am continually involved and participate with ‘Hunter Company’, (injured Royal Marine recruits) at CTC Lympstone in glorious Devon (and have been for the last seven years) as well as my ongoing fund raising talks.

My last major push (still in my NHS wheelchair) was from Augusta to Perth, in Western Australia, over 300 miles, last year which raised over $20,000 for ‘Canteen’ (an Oz charity for children with cancer) and Legacy (Western Australian Police benevolent fund).

During the push I also gave my illustrated talks to childrens’ schools and local charity associations en-route. On my arrival at…

“Get FIT4LIFE with Fit for Business”

August 10 2009 - (0) Comments - posted in fit for business

The Government’s National Campaign ‘Change4Life’ is urging us to get our kids to ‘Eat Well, Move More’ and ultimately ‘Live Longer’.

But it isn’t just our kids that need to be ensuring they are having a balanced, healthy way of life; we as adults, parents, siblings, grandparents and even as children ourselves – should be living the values too.  What better way is there for our children to learn, other than by example?

Maintaining a healthy way of life comes down to, as I see it, a simple formula:

Officially Fit For Business with the Essex Boot Camp

August 06 2009 - (1) Comments - posted in fit for business

When my colleague from across the office Lauren (FFB workplace champion co-ordinator) suggested going to ‘Boot Camp’ I thought she had gone slightly crazy! She didn’t strike me as the kind of girl that revelled in getting sweaty and muddy. However, when she explained to me that she wanted to go purely to experience a session, as her clients were already engaging in the camps, I then understood why she had suggested this rather mad notion!

Given this, I thought, ‘why not give it a go and practice what we preach’. I took a look at the Essex Bootcamp website and it looked quite hardcore but I’m a ‘gymoholic’ so I hoped I would survive…

The Power of Five

July 23 2009 - (0) Comments - posted in creating excellence

Two weeks ago we took time out from our day to day business for an away day as a team. One of the key quality objectives for us for the year ahead is to SIMPLIFY our business. I laid out to the team the vision and the benefits of working towards better results, clearer thinking and execution. I gave examples of challenging processes, checking daily task activity for relevance and working to the power of five.

So what has happened? The feedback on the session itself was great and left me full of expectation. In asking the team today what difference it has made since our away day session, the answer was varied. Some have fully embraced the message whilst others have used perceived barriers as reasons not to change.

As a business…

The Big Work Luncheon – Getting Everyone Fit For Business!

July 17 2009 - (0) Comments - posted in fit for business

The Fit For Business (FFB) team have been working with businesses across the Eastern Region to promote the idea of The Big Lunch.
Healthy Eating and Mental Wellbeing make up two of the five core components of the FFB Programme – so linking in with the ‘Big Lunch’ concept has been great to get our business placed ‘Champions’ to promote and run ‘Big Lunches’ within their own workplace!

Despite the event being on a Sunday, businesses have still been keen to hold their own ‘Big Lunch’ during the week running up to the big day! [Continue Reading]

Inspirational Speaker Sarah Storey’s Blog - Beijing Smart Talks

July 15 2009 - (0) Comments - posted in inspirational speakers

Returning to Beijing so soon after the Games last year was an emotional experience and as I walked through the terminal to meet my hosts from the British Council, the memories came flooding back. It was surreal to think I was back in the city that has changed my life even more than the previous Games I attended as a swimmer.
For this trip I was visiting to recount the experience from last year and also share my story of getting to the top of the podium in two sports. My overnight flight had been relatively short for the distance travelled, just 7 hours and I arrived and was ready for a trip to the Summer Palace before the work of the trip started the following day. One thing I had not appreciated on previous trips was the lack of local…

Embracing Web 2.0

July 06 2009 - (0) Comments - posted in creating excellence

Here at Creating Excellence we are excited by technology!! Working with our friends at Pixelwork (who designed our new and enhanced website) we are embracing the concept of Web 2.0.

Web 2.0 for those of you not already in the know is the technical terminology referring to the new second generation of web development and web design, with Web 1.0 – the first generation - being the World Wide Web itself. Web 2.0 is very complex to explain, to make it easier to understand I found a good ‘YouTube’ video upload that explains it, to see the video follow this link; http://blogs.sun.com/robin/entry/web_2_0_explained.

To simplify the term though, Web 2.0…
