A team from Greenwich will compete in the opening round of the London Panathlon Challenge against three other Olympic boroughs on January 26.
The competition for disabled youngsters will see Greenwich take on rivals from Newham, Hackney and Tower Hamlets at Langdon School in East Ham, with a place in the east London final on March 16 up for grabs.
A total of 22 teams from different London boroughs will participate over the next four weeks to determine who goes ahead to these area finals in February and March. At the end of the area finals, five teams will emerge to compete to become London Panathlon Challenge champions in June.
The Panathlon Challenge is now in its 10th year of delivering sporting opportunities and mini-Paralympic style competitions for young disabled Londoners.
More than 100 athletes aged between eight and 18, with 30 to 35 each from each borough involved, will compete against each other in boccia, new age kurling, polybat, football, table cricket and athletics.
Paralympic Champion and Panathlon charity patron Danny Crates said: “I’ve witnessed some great Panathlon events in the last year and the performances by young disabled athletes have been inspiring. The new investment from the Mayor of London and the other funders will enable even more people to benefit from specialist sports equipment, thousands of hours of coaching sessions and some real competitive action.”
